EMMA SOPs - Transportation
Sop for the shipment of live mice under SPF conditions
Prepare and autoclave a rodent transport box suitable for shipping mice under. Ensure the box contains sufficient bedding and nesting material.
Place the box inside a laminar flow chamber or cage changing station
Place the cage(s) containing the mice inside the laminar flow chamber, next to the transportation box.
Disinfect the outside the transport box, the cages containing the mice and your gloves.
Open both containers and transfer the animals to the transportation box.
Add sufficient transportation gel or other type of food and water substitute to last for at least twice the estimated journey time.
Close and seal the transport box.
Label the transport box with the contact details for both the sender and the recipient.
Label the box to indicate that it contains live SPF animals and indicate which is the ‘upper side’ of the transport box
e.g.
Attach an envelope containing:
a) The latest health report from the facility/room where the mice originated from.
b) A document giving details of the mice being contained within the transport box.
c) A copy of the legal documentation required for exportation from the senders country and importation into the recipients country.

Instructions for people recieving live mice from EMMA
The mice sent from the EMMA facilities were packed and shipped under SPF conditions.
However, please note that the unpacking and transfer procedures are critical for the maintenance of this health status.
Introduce the transport box into the appropriate mouse facility in accordance with your local rules and guidelines.
After receiving the transport box, spray the outside thoroughly with a disinfectant /sterilizing agent. Allow enough time for the product to act.
Place the clean cages, in which you wish to house the mice, inside a laminar flow chamber or changing station.
Place the transport box next to the clean cages inside the laminar flow chamber or changing station, ensuring that they do not touch each other.
Open the transport box.
Change/disinfect gloves and open the cage(s).
Pick up the mice, ensuring they do not touch the outside of the transport box, and transfer them into the clean cages.
Close the cages and transfer them to the appropriate racks
Close the transport box and remove it from the facility.
